5 Things You Should Never Do Before a Massage

The best part about getting a massage? You don't have to do anything. All you need to do is relax. There are some things that you need to avoid in order not to experience the bliss of massage therapy.

Water is okay, but liquor is prohibited. Barbara Wilson, a licensed therapist at Spa at PGA National, Palm Beach Gardens in Florida warns that alcohol can cause toxins to move through your body. Be hydrated prior to the massage.

2. Sunbathe

It can be hard to avoid sunburn on vacation. However, experts recommend staying out of direct sunlight for the day after your massage to reduce the risk of sunburn. Sunburn can be very painful to the touch. Wilson states that the last thing you need is to have someone rub your sunburnt, sensitive skin.

3. Feel ill

It's impossible to control what happens to your immune system. However, it's best to cancel your massage if your symptoms are severe. John Tanner, a massage therapist licensed at the Spa at PGA National warns that massage may spread infection or make you sick. "It is better for everyone if we cancel at least 24-hours in advance, and reschedule several days later when we are feeling better."

4. Self-groom

There's no reason why you should get all fancy in advance of your massage. Valerie Cario, a celebrity massage therapist can be booked through the Massage Mesa APP. There is absolutely no reason to regret not getting a pedicure once in a while.

5. Shower

Even though your intentions might be well-intentioned, a hot sauna before your massage is not recommended. A hot shower prior to your massage can increase blood circulation and make it easier for you to sweat throughout the session.
