How Do Dentists Treat Patients with Canker Sore?

Mar 15

Unknown to many, dentists can treat canker sores. According to Rockhill dentists, A canker sore is a tiny sore that develops on the inside of the mouth, usually on the tongue, inside of the lip, or on the cheek. It has a whitish appearance and is classified as an ulcer. The specific cause of a canker sore is unknown, however, it is thought to be caused by mouth trauma, immune system disorders, germs, or viruses. Canker sores aren't spreadable.

So how does a professional Rockhill dentist treat canker sores? What treatment do they use?

First and foremost, as mentioned above, a Rockhill dentist will try to identify the cause of the canker sore. Once the cause is identified, a treatment plan can be created. Treatment options may include:

-Minor surgery to cut away the dead tissue around the sore

-Prescription mouthwash or antibiotic gel

-Pain relief medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen

-Sucking on ice chips or ice pops

-Rinsing with saltwater

-Using over-the-counter products, such as Anbesol, Orabase, and Biotene.

Now let's take a closer look at these procedures.

Cutting away the dead tissue around the sore- Rockhill dentists may perform minor surgery to cut away the dead tissue around the sore. This helps to promote healing and prevent the sore from spreading. What happens if the dead tissue is not removed? Well, the sore will likely worsen and become more painful.

When cutting away the dead tissue, your Rockhill Dentist will first apply a numbing agent to the area. This will help to reduce any discomfort that you may feel. Once the tissue is cut away, your dentist will then clean the area and apply a bandage.

Prescription mouthwash or antibiotic gel- Rockhill dentists may prescribe an antibacterial mouthwash or antibiotic gel to help speed up the healing process and kill any bacteria that may be causing the sore. These mouthwashes or antibiotic gel contains high levels of chlorhexidine or cetylpyridinium chloride, which are known to be effective in treating canker sores.

How do you use the mouthwash or antibiotic gel? First, make sure to read the instructions that come with the product. Then, rinse your mouth with the mouthwash or antibiotic gel for the prescribed amount of time. Be sure to spit it out afterward. Do not swallow the mouthwash or antibiotic gel.

Pain relief medication- Rockhill dentists may prescribe pain relief medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to help relieve any pain or discomfort associated with the sore. Pain relief medications such as this can be taken as needed.

How much should you take? Follow the instructions on the package. Generally, ibuprofen or acetaminophen should be taken as directed. Do not take more than the recommended dose.

Sucking on ice chips or ice pops- Sucking on ice chips or ice pops can help to soothe the sore and provide relief from any pain or discomfort. When you suck on an ice chip or ice pop, it will help to numb the area and reduce the inflammation.

How long should you suck on it? Suck on an ice chip or ice pop for as long as you need to.

Rinsing with saltwater- Rockhill dentists may recommend rinsing with salt water to help clean the area around the sore and promote healing.

Using over-the-counter products- Over-the-counter products, such as Anbesol, Orabase, and Biotene, can be used to help soothe and protect the sore.
